The coronavirus epidemic in Europe changes by the hour, but we will endeavour to keep everyone updated on the European road freight situation.

At the moment, several European countries are closing their borders, but it is the intention that goods still need to flow in and out of Europe. We expect, however, with checks being in place at the borders that there will be some delays.

European Freight Operations

The European Commission issued new guidelines to member states to try and ensure European freight movements continue unimpeded, as it was “particularly crucial for essential goods such as food supplies including livestock, vital medical and protective equipment and supplies”, and that “member states should designate priority lanes for freight transport (e.g., via ‘green lanes’)”.

United Kingdom

Currently, there are no major delays at this time for road freight around the UK. There are delays at Eurotunnel Folkestone between 3-4 hours.

France

We are seeing some disruptions in France, but these are limited at this time. We believe that there will be growing driver shortages in the coming days.

Germany

More delays are being experienced in Germany and driver shortages are to be expected.

Italy

There are currently severe disruptions due to government restrictions in place. There are also driver shortages and equipment shortages.

Switzerland

We are seeing some disruptions, but these are limited at this time. Starting to see driver shortages.

Spain

There are currently severe disruptions due to government restrictions in place. There are also driver shortages and equipment shortages.

Portugal

Not too many delays are being seen at the border between Portugal and Spain.
