How to Find Your Tariff Code: A Complete and Easy Guide for UK Imports

When importing goods into the UK, you must know your tariff code to pass through UK Customs. Before your goods can be released to you, you're required to pay Duties and Taxes to Customs. Your tariff code helps dictate how much this cost will be.

In this article, we'll explain what a tariff code is and why you need one. Then, we'll explore the different options you have to find your product's tariff code.

What is a Tariff Code?

Your tariff code, also known as a Harmonised System (HS) code or commodity code, is integral to the shipping process. The code helps inform carriers, customs services, and other groups which category of goods you are shipping. It also helps clarify what level of VAT and customs duty you will need to pay on your import.

Your tariff code should be ten digits long and based on your product's category and possible sub-categories.

Why do I Need a Tariff Code?

Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) require you to declare the kind of goods you're importing into the country. Your tariff code is the standard way to manage this in the UK. It's your responsibility as the importer to ensure your product has the correct code.

So long as your shipment has the correct tariff code on all supporting documents and licenses, your freight should pass smoothly through customs.

Additionally, your tariff code serves other purposes. For example, when obtaining your tariff code, you'll be able to check whether there are any restrictions on your goods or if you'll need an import license. At the same time, you can check whether you're eligible for any preferential duty or duty relief.

How do You Find Your Products Tariff Code?

There are two primary ways to obtain a product tariff code in the UK. Before attempting either of these methods, you must understand precisely what kind of product you're shipping. Without making this kind of precaution, it's possible to end up attaching the wrong tariff code to your shipping documents.

Method One: Using the Online Trade Tariff Guide

The easiest method to attain your tariff code is to use the government's online trade tariff guide. When first using the service it may appear as if there are an overwhelming amount of possible categories and codes. However, the system is designed to be easy to navigate and provide the most accurate definition of your goods possible. There are three primary ways you can find your code using this website:

  • Search The Tariff: Using the search bar on the home page, you can type a short description of your goods. This description could be the type or name of the product. Once you've pressed enter, you should find yourself on the appropriate category page, where you can further define your product to find the correct code.
  • Search A-Z: By selecting the 'A-Z' option in the menu, you'll be taken to a comprehensive list of all categories in alphabetical order. From here, you can scroll until you find a category that matches your product. From the category page, you can further define your item to get the correct code.
  • Search by Section: Below the search bar on the home page, goods have been divided into 21 general sections. By clicking the most relevant section to your product, you'll be taken to a new page with categories related to the section. Once you've found the category that most fits your product, you can define it further to find the correct code.

Method Two: Emailing HMRC

If using the online trade tariff guide didn't work, or you're unsure whether you found the correct code, your next option is to email the HMRC directly. To do this, you should email HMRC at classification.enquiries@hrmc.gsi.gov.uk with a complete description of your product. The HMRC have strict criteria about enquiries, so you'll need to provide a comprehensive description of your product, including:

  • Your full contact details, including company and contact name
  • Which of the following items best describes your item: agricultural, chemical, textiles, ceramics, electrical, mechanical, or miscellaneous
  • What materials your product is made from
  • What the product is used for
  • How your product works and functions
  • How your product will be packaged and presented

It may also help to include the closest fitting code you could find or the nearest category. A complete guide to what HRMC expects when you email them can be found here
